Wooden crucifix depicting the Christ of the Alps. The body of Jesus-made of basswood-is portrayed on a pastoral cross with a very rough surface and the typical curved horizontal cross arm. This work of art is delicately hand-painted with oil paints, and embellished with details gilded with a thin gold-like brass leaf. The body of Jesus (about 40 cm / 15 ½ in tall) is truly detailed, and the face used to be created to express the suffering felt by the Saviour. The cross (about 45 cm / 17 ¾ in wide x 85 cm / 33 ½ in tall) is without doubt one of the most important symbols of Christianity. In the splendid Val Gardena – an Italian area devoted to masterful woodcarving – creativity, passion, and attention to detail blend together to create this wall cross and other fancy wooden sculptures portraying a plethora of subjects, to be had in different sizes and finishes.
